Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

I teach in a Spanish Immersion school where the students learn Math, Science, and Cultural Studies in Spanish language. Half of the day is entirely in Spanish and the other half in English.

My school has been working to make sure all the proper precautions are in place so that we can stay in person and do not have to change to remote learning.

My students understand the precautions and take it seriously because they want to be able to learn in person and work together.

According to online school data The percentage of students achieving proficiency in reading/language arts is 30-34% which is lower than the Indiana state average of 49%. Minority enrollment is 93% of the student body (majority Hispanic). Over 80% get free or reduced-price lunches. This is only one small aspect of the students I work with. They are a caring group that looks for ways to improve the school and help those around them. They have a strong school community and are eager to learn and explore.

My Project

Thinking back on my time in music, I loved playing instruments and singing. I want to give all of my students that experience even with Covid-19 restrictions. Having access to an air purifier will give us an extra layer of mitigation for keeping us healthy as we sing, chant, and make music. A few extra sets of rhythm sticks will allow us to clean them between classes so students can have access to hands-on materials every day they are in music. My school and students have been working very hard this year to make sure we are staying safe in school and these resources will help us do that.
