Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
We are an urban high school which lacks the necessary materials and resources for our students to thrive. Our neighborhood is high poverty and we are considered to be one of the most challenging schools in our area. I have taught here for 16 years and enjoy the creative spirit of my students. Over the years I have had the pleasure of seeing my students discover talents they never knew they had. I strive to expose them to as many diversified artistic experiences as I can.
My Project
We started off the year with enough clay to do two projects and students were excited to be creative. With students engaged in learning we started hand building and glazing the work with great results. They are looking forward to working on the potters wheels and creating sculptures. Due to a lack of resources we have presently been doing studio projects and the students are loosing interest because they want to get back to building with clay. I need to re-engage the students and get them back to being excited about ceramics class again. The new clay and glaze resources will secure that happening. I often hear from students that they only came to school because they wanted to work on their ceramics project. Having the resources they need to work will help students maintain good attendance and ultimately keep their grades high.
