Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Picasso is quoted as saying: "All children are artists. The problem is how to remain an artist once he grows up." My school in Atlanta, Georgia is no exception to this idea. These students range from grades Kindergarten through Fifth. This quote is evident in our art classroom, as students get older they believe less in their natural artistic abilities.

While some students enthusiastically walk into a classroom each day, others need motivation and inspiration to focus on school.

The art room provides a place for exploration and creativity. This individualized approach helps to develop critical skills for our student population. The majority of our students are English Language Learners, so art can help support emerging language skills.

My Project

Currently, we are building our art program. We recently got a working kiln but now we need the clay to help bring our creative ideas to life. Hand building with clay helps build fine motor skills that will improve writing skills needed in school.

Students will be creating a silly face mug inspired by famous folk artist Lanier Meaders.

Students also get the opportunity to translate their ideas into a 3D work of art and learn more about Georgia history. This will open our students to a new experience as well as help form connections to our curriculum and Social Studies. This would be a beneficial best practice for our English Language Learners. Please help support our first clay project ever.
