Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

We are an urban high school where there is a lack of necessary materials and resources for our students to thrive. Our neighborhood is high poverty and we are considered to be one of the most challenging schools in our area. I have taught here for 17 years and enjoy the creative spirit of my students.

Over the years I have had the pleasure of seeing my students discover talents they never knew they had.

I strive to expose them to as many diversified artistic experiences as I can.

My Project

The clay will be used to teach my students how to hand build by pinching, coiling, rolling out slabs, and throwing on the potters wheel. Students learn these skills in Ceramics I and then move on into Ceramics II where they work on a more independent level and design and create their own pieces. Once students learn these clay building skills they are able to create forms which bring their ideas to life. They learn the ceramic process beginning with modeling the clay to the final glazing.

Having this necessary resource in Ceramics class keeps students engaged and motivated to come to school.

Students often tell me they were going to stay home but came to school because they wanted to work on their project. It is important to have resources to engage students in class and to help them have good attendance at the same time.
