My Students

My classroom is a global wonder. Students come from the Dominican Republic, Bangladesh, Yemen, Cuba, Puerto Rico, El Salvador, Ecuador, Guatemala, Honduras, Peru, and many West African countries like Senegal, Guinea, and Burkina Faso just to name a few. These teenagers come with their own experiences, awarenesses, and languages. Art may not have been a part of the their school curriculum before. Art might be seen as just play. Art might not be a subject worth taking seriously (at least not at first but oh boy, once they get their elbows deep...). Our school values heterogeneity and collaboration.

Sometimes, you walk into my classroom and they are silently writing or drawing, other times it's so loud you can't hear the person next you, it's organized chaos!!

And we love every minute of it. They're learning and thinking outside the box every day. It's only October and I love it when they tell me "Miss, your class is hard. I thought it was just painting or drawing something nice"

My Project

In January 2017, our students will embark on a journey back in time to study Ancient Civilizations in their Global History class. In art class, we are going to focus on a variety of sculpting techniques in order to successfully recreate authentic artifacts from these civilizations and write museum descriptions that inform the viewer about their function and the civilization it belongs to. Four classes will create a museum exhibition -using Magic Mud clay, and invite our entire school so that they can ask questions and learn from these student experts.

By contributing, you will be helping my students further develop their creative and critical thinking skills, as well as their English language presentation skills.

For most of these students, visual communication is where they excel the most because English is their second language. Please help us celebrate their reading, writing, listening and speaking progress through art making!
