Clay and Culture: Equity and Hispanic Heritage Through Ceramic Arts

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Project

This October, to honor Hispanic Heritage Month, my Ceramics and Advanced Ceramics students will embark on a vibrant cultural journey. Through hands-on creation of ceramic vessels inspired by Latin American folk art, students will explore the artistic traditions of Hispanic communities and express them through clay, color, and storytelling. Using underglaze pencils and bright, culturally resonant glaze colors, students will decorate their pieces before they are bisque-fired in our kiln.

Students will research diverse forms of Latin American folk art—from Mexican Talavera to Peruvian retablos and Puerto Rican vejigante masks so that that they have be inspired to design and sculpt a vessel that reflects their own experiences in a new way.

By spotlighting underrepresented voices and traditions in a hands-on way, students deepen their understanding of culture through craft. It's an inclusive, engaging way to celebrate diversity in our classroom.

Exploring equity in my school is important because our population is 70% Hispanic. Having this project funded by October would be special because it directly validates, empowers, and reflects the lived experiences and identities of the majority of the students.
