it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
About My Students
Every year, I'm assigned middle-school library helpers to help run the library at our K-8 Center. Sometimes, the aides are good; other times, ho hum......However, this year, I've hit the jackpot! I have Claudio and Alex as aides.
These guys are in 8th grade. They are smart, respectful...and they are bibliophiles. More than that, they are in love with COMIC books. Claudio and Alex have been checking out comic books from me for years. When I mentioned to them that Donors Choose now allows middle schoolers to post projects, they jumped at the chance to expand the library's comic book collection.
I have watched the boys work on this project over the past two weeks. They started off by making a comic book wish-list on Amazon. Then, they had to revise the list so that their selections were appropriate for school-age kids. Next, Claudio and Alex wrote their 'pitch' for the books. I didn't interfere, and I was really pleased by the result. You can tell, looking at their prose, that these guys are serious fans. The boys don't know it yet, but this will be the first of several comic books projects that they write this year. They'll also be making a special display stand to draw people's attention to the comic books area.
In Their Own Words
Our goal as students in Dr. Pearson’s class is to entertain while educating each child that comes to the library. We expect to exceed and brighten their creativity and knowledge to the point that they can on their own. We ourselves are comic freaks, and we think the kids will enjoy all of the crazy mayhem in the books as we do. Growing up, comic books impacted our lives and opened up our minds to new perspectives.
If we get these books we can spread what we have learned in them to the children, such as integrity, humbleness, doing what’s right, and being who you are. Most of our kids here at school are the children of immigrants, and they didn’t have the opportunity to enjoy the books that we’ve enjoyed, where they came from.
It would be a huge benefit to the children and to the library if we acquired the books requested. We will be forever grateful and so will the kids because the books are sort of an escape from reality, and they teach kids valuable lessons.
