This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Project
Ceramic glaze is such an important supply and tool needed because it is a layer of glass which is fused to a pottery body through firing. Glaze can serve to color, decorate or waterproof an item. Glazing renders earthenware vessels suitable for holding liquids and sealing the bisqueware body.
The glaze I am requesting for my students to have access to in my class is called Mayco's Jungle Gems.
Mayco’s Jungle Gems are gloss glaze bases with pieces of glass frit that melt during the firing process. As the crystals bloom, they produce dramatic, colorful effects. The crystal glazes maintain their color with increased crystal movement at the higher temperature.
This is very exciting because I can feel safe that my emerging amazing ceramics artists are getting to use the best to color their pieces. I try to provide wide variety of colors to allow their true visions to come to life.
I would like to use these glazes on a project where my students have to design a ceramic coil vases. They will learn how to create hand rolled coils from a log of clay. Students will have to use at least 3 different styles of coils. Some examples are spiral, doughnut, braided, twisted, and many other.
Also this glaze would also be used on custom Tic Tac Toe Boards as well. Tic Tac Toe's origins can be traced back to ancient Egypt, where such game boards have been found on roofing tiles dating from around 1300 BC. Students will build playing boards and custom sculpt figures to represent the X and O pieces.
