My Students
One aspect about first grade students that I love is their perseverance. I have had students across all subjects who continue to try and try again until they finally accomplish whatever task it is they are working on. In particular with reading, I love to see the growth from the beginning of the year to the end.
First graders are so eager to help others, whether it is a fellow classmate or a teacher.
I love the way they all rush to participate when I tell them I, or someone else, needs help with something. They do it willingly, with great big smiles on their faces.
My Project
I completed my masters with a capstone project covering current research on flexible seating in the classroom. I was looking for a positive correlation between flexible seating and student performance and behavior.
Last year, I was able to offer a few flexible seating options to my students in order to test my own theory on the subject.
I had a little bit of anxiety going into it after listening to the fear and failures of other teachers. The voice of my mentor, however, stuck in my mind. "Set your expectations high and your students will meet them." I decided to finally go for it and my students did amazing. They loved having the choice of sitting anywhere they wanted. It was interesting to see the patterns of student choice on where they wanted to sit and who they wanted to sit by each day. I witnessed my students on a regular basis collaborating and helping each other out. Along with the flexible seating, students were able to choose what centers they wanted during guided reading time.
Ultimately, I am striving for a classroom that is student-centered where students learn to take control of their learning, while also practicing decision making skills and taking care of their learning environment . Last year, I had a great experience dipping my toes in the water and now I am ready to dive in.
This year I am hoping to add more stability cushions for work time and little sand timers so students can be in charge of building their independent reading stamina!
