My Students
I am a Global History and English as a New Language teacher in a Title I school that serves 6 -12th grade students.
My 9th grade students come from diverse backgrounds and speak a multitude of languages including Spanish, Bengali, Punjabi, Arabic, Hindi and Haitian Creole.
Recently, my classroom has welcomed a large number of newly arrived students from Central America.
My students are children of immigrants or immigrants themselves and have a myriad of stories that make them each bring something unique to our classroom environment. Despite socioeconomic and language barriers, my students enter the 9th grade eager to learn about world history, especially when it is presented as a story with multiple perspectives.
My Project
The dry erase whiteboards will transform my classroom walls into usable space. Currently, my classroom has damaged chalkboards that prevent me from using them as an instructional tool.
Dry erase whiteboards are an essential tool in my classroom because they will give my students the opportunity to view important history notes, vocabulary words and sentence/ writing frames.
The whiteboards will be a reference tool for students to use on a daily basis. My ENL students and struggling readers and writers will benefit the most since they are most successful when they have immediate access to vocabulary and sentence frames.
Additionally, I will be able to deliver instruction much more effectively because the whiteboards will allow me to organize and record student thoughts, create visual representations of difficult concepts and to post reminders and updates for my students, such as homework assignments and important deadlines.
