This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Project

Creating an environment that supports diverse learning needs is essential for fostering academic growth and emotional well-being especially. Currently, our classroom is an old, empty space that holds tremendous potential to be transformed into a dynamic learning environment through the introduction of flexible seating arrangements and a sensory area.

Flexible seating offers a solution by providing a variety of seating options such as wobble stools, bean bags, floor cushions, and standing desks.

These choices empower students to select seating that best meets their sensory and comfort needs, thereby promoting concentration and engagement in learning activities. For students with ADHD, the ability to move and fidget subtly can enhance their focus and reduce restlessness, allowing them to channel their energy productively. Similarly, students with autism benefit from seating options that provide sensory input and promote a sense of security and calmness, which can lead to improved attention and participation in classroom tasks.

A dedicated sensory area within our classroom will serve as a sanctuary where students can regulate their sensory inputs and emotions. For children with autism, sensory areas provide a predictable and safe environment where they can self-regulate and manage sensory overload. This promotes a sense of control and reduces anxiety, enabling them to engage more effectively in learning activities. Similarly, sensory breaks in a designated area can benefit students with ADHD by allowing them to reset and refocus, ultimately improving their ability to participate in classroom tasks.
