Classroom, Sweet Classroom! Building an Upper Elementary Montessori Classroom
My students need some fluffy rugs and comfy seats to cozy up in our classroom when they're hard at work.

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
After three years of hard work and learning, I am finally stepping into my very own classroom as the teacher of record!
I am so excited to announce that I have been hired as an upper elementary teacher.
I currently have 14 (soon to be more) 4th-6th graders who are looking forward to their first year at our school. Although I don't know much about them yet, I do know that they deserve a fully-functioning Montessori classroom where they can feel safe, comfortable, and in charge of their learning.
My Project
Montessori classrooms are all about promoting peace and tranquility in the learning environment. They are furnished in natural woods, painted in pastels, and decorated in a neat and airy way. They in no way look like your typical elementary classroom.
The walls in my classroom are meant to be bare, the floors however are not!
Because our room has wood flooring, I need rugs to provide the kids with plenty of comfortable places to spread out and get their work done. I have three different places in the classroom where I plan to have student circles and independent work stations.
One space in particular that I'm working to create for the kids is our reading nook. I've searched high and low to find books to fill our shelves, and now they need somewhere to cozy up and fall in love with them. I'll use one of the area rugs and both bean bag chairs in the reading nook.
The other two rugs will be used for our morning meeting space and for our hands-on area. Because I plan to meet with the students every morning and read through the schedule, I want them to have somewhere comfortable to sit while we get started with our day. They also need space to sit and work with the Montessori materials.
As a first year teacher I'm short on supplies and even shorter on funds. I've bought hundreds of dollars worth of materials and supplies so far and my classroom is still in need of more. Building a classroom is a work and progress, but with your help I can start off with a strong foundation to build off of!
