Celebrate Black Teachers and Students

This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.

My Students

I am a special education teacher in an inclusion class for students with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD). A major component of our classroom goals is to develop social skills, problem solving skills, reading skills and comprehension.

All of my students receive free breakfast and lunch.

They are eager to learn and love hands-on learning experiences, but they require various classroom supports to encourage them to follow the classroom expectations, stay focused, help others, participate and be a part of the group.

My Project

One support our class has is a reward system. Students earn points for following the classroom expectations, being on task, helping others and participating.

Students can then use their points to shop for prizes.

The Angry Bird toys will be used as prizes. Having prizes that are cool and exciting help motivate them to make good choices in the classroom.

Our students also need limited distractions, which hinder student learning outcomes. My students can benefit from having various hand fidgets, such as the snap and click, play foam and textured sensory fidgets. The fidgets help students focus and be activate participants in their learning. They keep restless hands busy and help them maintain focus.

All of these supports will help my students learn and be successful in the classroom!
