This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My students are all amazing! I teach students with special needs. Many are on the autism spectrum, but some of other disabilities as well. We work hard at learning academic skills such as reading, writing, and math. We also work at learning social skills, such as peer interaction, turn taking, and cooperation. We learn life skills, like brushing our teeth, learning how to use money, and basic cleaning skills like sweeping and cleaning tables. Some of my students are nonverbal and are learning alternate forms of communication. Some are English Language learners, and are learning language as well as all the other skills they are taught throughout the day.

My Project

My project is for classroom supplies that my students need and use on a daily basis. I teach alternate curriculum to students with moderate to severe disabilities. We do hands on learning, and I use many different modalities of teaching throughout the day to reach my students. Some cannot verbalize their choices, and many use choice boards, with pictures that are secured with velcro. We go through a lot of velcro in my class! My students continue to need fine motor support, so pencil grips and training scissors are helpful to them.

I reinforce my students for working hard, and completing their work.

When they are finished with an activity, they get to choose a fidget toy out of the reinforcement box to play with for a few moments before moving on to the next task. Some of their favorites are play doh, squishy balls, and liquid bubblers- they love to watch the bubbles float up when they turn the device back and forth.

We try to keep our classroom clean and keep the germs at bay, with many bodies moving from table to table throughout the day. Each day all the tables get wiped down and sanitized to be prepared for the next day. The students are learning how to effectively clean the tables using Lysol wipes.
