Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
Most of my students are English Language Learners. My classroom consists of 23 boys and girls who are energetic, excited and passionate first graders who come to school eager to learn. My students do not have the privilege that others have and even buying school supplies is a challenge.
My students are from a diverse ethnic background, many whom do not speak English, but that does not stop them for wanting to learn.
They are learning in a low income area. Most of them are already 7 years old and my class has more girls than boys. A typical day in my classroom starts in our meeting area at 8:15 am and ends at 2:20 pm when they go home. My students come to the meeting area so excited and filled with anxiety when they sit in the meeting area waiting for our greetings and what to expect for the day's activities.
My Project
My students learn best through hands on learning. These materials would allow them to use their hands and build their phonics and reading skills. My students love center time. It is one of their favorites activities of the day. During center time my students have the opportunity to work in small groups on a variety of learning activities. Some of their favorites include word building center, read, write sight word center, reading center, spelling center, and roll a dice and write a sentence. The students will use the magnetic letters to build words, write sentences, and to recognize letters. They also will use the dry erase magnetic board for the spelling centers to practice the spelling words of the week and to write sentences when they roll the dice. In addition, they will use the dry erase markers to write their words and sentences. They will use the bins to store their centers supplies. They will use the differentiated dice to create a new sight word center.
My students will be able to use hands-on-learning by using these supplies.
They will be able to enhance their word work and phonics skills. I am sure that by having these materials in my classroom my students will be able to build the skills they need to become better readers and writers by the end of the school year. I believe that with your donations my students will have the opportunity to enhance their phonics and reading skills.
