I teach STEAM in a low-income, Title I school, where most of my students live in poverty. Most either live in low income apartments, or are in multigenerational households for economic reasons. Despite their many obstacles to learning, these students are motivated to learn and excel when provided opportunities and materials to do so. I work hard to create diverse lessons that utilize both technology and hands-on activities to create meaningful learning experiences.
Unfortunately, my classroom budget is very limited and so my students don't have access to technology and materials readily available in more affluent schools.
As the STEAM teacher, I desire to provide every student in the school the means to explore science in new ways despite financial limitations or the myriad of challenges they face outside of school.
My Project
During these past few years of Covid it has taken extra effort to capture my students' attention and engage them in learning. As a STEAM teacher, it is important to have tools and supplies for students to have hands on activities to re-engage students to the physical classroom. It is also important that they have journals to document learning and the ability to proudly display their creations.
As they return to the classroom from online learning, my students will have these materials to engage in learning at a new level through arts integrated science lessons.
Among the many lessons you will help provide are these: 1st graders will be able to create shadow puppet shows, 5th graders will be able to create and design physical change Chilhuly inspired sculptures using plastic plates and a teacher applied heat gun, and 6th graders will create black light illuminated scale models of the solar system.
I will integrate literacy with the engineering process by reading aloud the engineering book series by Andrea Beaty, including her newest Aaron Slater and Iggy Peck Architect. They will be able to become artists, engineers, and architects using the clay, tongue depressors, and other crafting supplies included in this project.
Finally, all of my students will be able to document their science discoveries in science journals they will create using the spiral binding machine. Making their own journals, instead of using pre-constructed ones, allows for the integration of the student's own artistic illustrations and visual art models.
More than half of students from low‑income households
