Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

We are an integrated collaborative teaching (ICT) first-grade class, with a mixture of general and special education students at a high-needs, Title I school in the Bronx. While the majority of students come from low-income homes or from homes with limited parental involvement, they are enthusiastic and come to school every day ready to learn. They see school as a consistent part of their daily lives and love to make me proud.

My first graders are some of the happiest children I have ever had the pleasure of working with, and they inspire me to provide the best education I can for them.

My Project

In first grade, we work hard all day... every day. It is a time of tremendous academic growth that requires students to put forth a lot of effort and commitment. However, we like to have fun too! Every week, our class engages in “fun centers” as a reward for students for their hard work throughout the week. These centers are designed to explore children’s creativity, as well as allow them the opportunity to practice skills of collaboration and socialization within small groups at a center of their own choosing. We are requesting a microwave to open a cooking center. This microwave will be used for students to make simple dishes for their classmates, including s’mores, hot cocoa, etc. We will also use it to heat up their foods during special events throughout the school year. We started this center last year, and unfortunately, our class microwave recently broke. Every day, I hear, “Ms. R, when can we start cooking again?” I would love to bring it back for them, and this microwave will be a great way to start!

The paper towels, Lysol spray, and disinfecting wipes will be used to maintain cleanliness within the classroom.

This is the time of year when a lot of children start to get sick. We would like to have these supplies to encourage sanitation and help prevent the spread of germs. Students will be responsible for keeping their desks and materials clean and germ-free!
