I'm a teacher of students with special needs on the South Side of Chicago at a school that has had a troubled history of being severely under-funded. Many of these students have never left their community and even more of them have never engaged in project-based learning. I am requesting books that will help students get excited about learning because they allow students to explore in detail everyday issues that have relevance to their lives and then do something in the community that relates to what they learned in class. The books challenge students to move beyond the everyday and to look carefully at the world in which they live and then do something about the problems they perceive. We will do a unit on the environment and nutrition, using "Fastfood Nation" as our primary text. We will take students into the community where they can learn how to take action to solve the lunchroom nutrition problem and the obesity problem among their peers. Students will do this by educating their peers on the problems associated with poor nutrition and starting a campaign to get healthier food served in schools. In addition, later in the year we hope to explore issues of diversity in society by reading "A Lesson Before Dying" and "A House on Mango Street." Our class will use these texts as a launching point for discussion about racism and diversity and we will initiate a diversity awareness project at our school as well as develop a project to help bridge the cultural gap between different student populations. Our school is made up of 50 percent Latino students and 50 percent African American students and this text will allow our class to have a discussion about race, diveristy and community. Finally, we will do a unit on the theater, reading "Oedipus" and attending an actor's workshop and a play at Shakespeare Chicago theater company. Make a difference in the lives of these students by supporting our school programs. Donate today! Thank you for your time and your generosity!
