Next year I will be teaching 2nd grade at a Title I school where I have taught for 20 years. Basic classroom resources are very limited. Our community is ethnically and socioeconomically diverse, and I feel honored to be teaching at a school that celebrates and embraces cultural diversity. The teachers, staff, parents, and students truly make this school a special and unique place.
Despite living in one of the most wealthy regions in California, many of my students come from low-income families.
They face hardships that no child should have to face, yet they come to school with positive attitudes, smiles on their faces, and an enthusiasm for learning that is contagious. The majority of our students are socioeconomically disadvantaged, and more than fifty percent of my students are English Language Learners.
My Project
As we approach the final few months of school I, like many teachers, am already preparing my classroom for a new group of students in the fall!
I want all of my students to feel confident and successful from the minute they walk into my classroom.
This starts on day one, when each child has brand new school supplies that will motivate and inspire them all year long. Many of my students cannot afford basic classroom supplies of their own, so providing students with these resources on the very first day of school is essential.
Getting new folders for each subject, notebooks for writing and crayons, glue sticks and markers for art projects will help my students feel ready to begin a new school year.
Providing my students with these basic supplies ensures that each and every student in my class has an equal start. Each of them will have the supplies and materials that they need in order to have a successful school year!
