Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I have 18 amazing students who are faced with challenges both in and out of the classroom. Our school is a Title I school, located in a low-income/high poverty area. Many of them are being raised in bilingual households and receive a free lunch based on their socioeconomic status. Despite these challenges they continue to have a positive attitude toward each other and treat me with complete respect.
I’m an avid do-it-yourselfer, and I tell my students they can do anything with the right tools and instructions.
My goal is to make sure they get the tools and instruction necessary for successful growth. I want to motivate, and engage them, while teaching them how to be confident in their skills.
My Project
My students need some of the basic tools to get the job done. These items will be used in our daily lessons to help keep students more engaged. Many students have arrived recently from Puerto Rico and are new to our school and I want to make sure they have what they need to succeed. Giving low-income students access to instruments that other students may take for granted is a minor investment in their future.
This year we are focusing on close reading and my students will use highlighters and post it notes to annotate the texts we read.
They have group bins that will keep the highlighters, markers, glue, and pencils organized. The white boards and markers will be used for math…working out problems and showing their answers. The divider tabs will be used in their binders to keep their graded work organized so that they can share it with their parents
