FULLY FUNDED! Ms. David's classroom raised $652

This project is fully funded

I teach 2nd grade at a Title I school that is located in the "projects" in Opelousas, a small town in Southern Louisiana. I have students in my class who are students who were in large classes and were falling through the cracks. They have been in my class for 2 months and their grades have gone from D's and F's to A's and B's due to the one-on-one and tactile experiences I am able to provide such a small group. Despite their personal hardships, the parents of my students are cooperative, supportive and want better for their children than what their own life experiences have been. Most of my parents are single mothers and single fathers struggling to survive without formal education in an area where there are no jobs for them because of that. As such, there is very little money for basic necessities much less school supplies. I also need to point out that community support has dwindled due to Hurricane Katrina and Hurricane Rita. We have had a huge influx of New Orleans refugees who came here with nothing except the clothes on their backs. The community has done all it can but we still need help with our schools. My class is in desperate need of pencils, crayons, markers, wide-ruled notebook paper, and construction paper. My students love to map out our lessons to make them more understandable and I try to make our lessons as hands-on as possible. I am also in desperate need of Children's Dictionaries; my students do not know how to use a dictionary and it is imperative that they learn how to use one. My students love to read and I want them to know how to look up words they do not know when they come across them in books they are reading. These children love school and they love learning, it makes teaching them a privilege instead of a job. Several of my students have asthma and the chalk dust from my blackboard is causing them health issues. I am requesting a dry erase board to solve this problem. This will cut down on their reactions and missed days of school due to the chalk dust. Our classroom is EXTREMELY small and the dust settles everywhere and we breathe it. We are desperately in need of a dry erase board. My students have dreams of college and understand that an education is their way out of poverty. I have a relationship with the parents so they know that I will mentor the children throughout their lives, not just in 2nd grade. I love my students and it is important to me that they succeed not only in 2nd grade, but in life. I have spent over $2000 of my own money to get books for our classroom library and supplies for the children. Unfortunately, I am unable to spend anymore and my parents are struggling to provide basic necessities for the children. My children are in such need and this grant would go so far in helping them learn. I could use the dictionaries year after year. I will gladly do whatever is necessary to comply with any and all terms associated with this grant and I thank you sincerely for your kind consideration of my request.
