I teach 25 first grade students in a high poverty school in Washington, DC, where over 99% receive free and reduced lunch. The children's needs are very diverse, as they operate at varying skill levels and it is our goal at my school to find resources to make sure everyone's needs are met. We also always need basic supplies to keep our classroom running smoothly. Students and families' abilities to contribute are limited, so we look to donors to fill in the gaps.
In first grade, students use many tools to enrich their learning. Two very common ones are clipboards and books. Every day, students bring clipboards with them to the rug so they can respond in writing to the books being read aloud.
An organized learning environment helps students focus.
Unfortunately, without shelving and storage options, the clipboards and books we use each day end up in messy piles. This issue can be fixed with the organizational tools requested in this project.
The clipboard holders will cut down on transition time, as students will be able to move more quickly when retrieving and returning those tools. The bookshelf will allow the current unit texts to be displayed, so students can access them outside of the read aloud block.
