I work at a low-income school in Clarkston, WA. More than 80% of the students in our school qualify for the free and reduced-price lunch program. Until my teaching partner and I got them, my students were considered the problem class that no one wanted.
Since joining our class, my students work hard every day and are learning how to be self-sufficient learners and workers.
Their behavior has gone from being consistently violent and disrespectful to being focused on the future and working on mindfulness and meditation to control their tempers.
My Project
My students and I have recently made the transition to flexible seating in our classroom. We currently have scoop rockers, bucket seats and a couch. Since we switched to these options, they have learned to work independently much better than they did before. They now realize they are able to move to a different spot if they are distracted by the people around them or cannot focus on their work because they are not comfortable where they are sitting.
Since they don't have desks now, they need a place to keep their things.
These storage containers and hanging wall organizers will be used to organize their supplies so that they can always find them. That way they can stay organized while still learning how to monitor their own learning through choosing their own seating.
