Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
"The limits of my language are the limits of my world." - Ludwig Wittgenstein.
In my classes, I teach students the English language and literacy skills necessary for success in the United States.
I work in a high-poverty urban district in Massachusetts.
It has been designated as chronically underperforming.
My school has 500 students, of which over ninety percent identify as Hispanic. Eighty-three percent of students receive free or reduced lunch. In addition, eighty percent of students speak a language other than English at home (primarily Spanish). Throughout the district, over thirty percent of students are ELL.
In my classes, students are primarily from the Dominican Republic. I have some students from Puerto Rico, Guatemala, Haiti, and Vietnam as well. Most have come to the United States within the last three to four years.
My Project
The white boards will be used for students to present informal presentations. In particular, students do a lot of pre-writing activities in groups. They will be able to present in front of the class using evidence they found.
The reason why I prefer white boards to paper is that my students often are concerned about having the "correct answer." White boards are easily erasable, making it okay for them to make mistakes and fix them. It also will be much more sustainable than buying chart paper, which is both expensive and environmentally unfriendly.
By having six sets of white boards and dry erase markers, my students will be able to work in small groups of three to four students.
This will allow them to practice English more and engage more with the material.
