As part of the Social Studies curriculum, the sixth graders at Turner-Drew Language Academy will soon be studying World War II. Aside from the great historical relevance of the war, it was also a time of extreme intolerance and fear. I would like to expand on these universal themes and create a cross-curriculum project that will include the reading of “The Diary of Anne Frank.” I believe this work is an excellent, first-hand account, written by a child of similar age as my students. I am hoping that - through reading Frank's own words - my students will be able to bridge the gap between the facts learned in Social Studies and the personal experience of a young Jewish girl that not only focuses on the horrible accounts, but also on the element of maintaining hope in the midst of despair. However, there are insufficient funds to purchase a classroom set of this novel, and it would be a burden on many of the children's families to purchase individual copies of the book. Therefore I am asking for your help. I foresee that this project will become a staple in both Reading and Social Studies for the sixth grade. Therefore, the class set of novels will be used annually. Thank you for your consideration.
