Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My international high school serves immigrant and refugee students from all over the world who have recently arrived in the United States. We are nearly 100% Free and Reduced Lunch, and many of our students are homeless or highly mobile. My students are from all over the world but mainly come from Somalia, Ethiopia, Oromia, Mexico, Ecuador, Guatemala, Vietnam. Beyond adjusting to life in a new country with a culture different from their own, they enter our school facing the challenge of learning high school content in a new language while simultaneously learning that language.

They come as eager learners, yet face many barriers to their learning that students who have grown up in an American school system do not face.

Our students come with a diverse educational background, everything from never taking a math class to already having taken calculus. This diversity makes for an incredibly supportive and collaborative learning environment.

Issues with acculturation, family reunification, and immigration processes are just to name a few. Given that our students face many challenges to continuing their education, our school strives to support them in any and every way we can!

My Project

Our school has expanded in recent years but funding hasn't kept up; as a result we don't have enough calculators for many of the math classes. We gave many of our older calculators out to students during Distance Learning and did not receive all of them back unfortunately. Currently the teachers have to plan quizzes on different days so we can share classroom sets of calculators throughout the school.

We could really use another classroom set of calculators to ensure all students have access to classroom technology and can check one out as needed to take home and work on their homework.

Many of our students do not have phones or internet at home, and so checking a calculator out is essential for practicing math like trigonometry at home.
