My Project
My U.S. History students are amazing, curious, and concerned. They look upon the status of democracies throughout the world and seek perspective and wisdom. Timothy Snyder's “On Tyranny” helps them develop a deeper understanding of how democracies can erode and the ways in which authoritarianism can take root. In an age where democracy seems to be increasingly fragile, Snyder provides a roadmap for recognizing the early signs of tyranny and the steps individuals can take to protect democratic institutions.
By engaging with “On Tyranny”, my students will benefit from a framework for critical thinking about political systems, historical patterns, and the importance of civic engagement.
In particular, Snyder emphasizes the need for vigilance, the importance of democratic norms, and the power of ordinary people to resist authoritarian impulses. These lessons can help students contextualize their concerns about modern political developments and empower them to be active participants in safeguarding democracy.
Moreover, in an era where schools face increasing security threats, the safety of my students is paramount. Just as Snyder urges individuals to protect democracy through small, deliberate actions, having safety measures in place—like security curtains—can be an essential safeguard in the event of a crisis. Safety curtains are designed to protect students in the case of a security threat by creating barriers between them and potential danger. By deploying these curtains, we can ensure that our students feel secure in their learning environment while also demonstrating the importance of proactive measures in safeguarding the well-being of a community.
Together, the wisdom gained from “On Tyranny” and the physical security provided by safety curtains can empower my students to think critically about the world and take steps to protect both their society and themselves.
