My students are special ed/special needs students who would benefit greatly from enhancements in our classroom. I'm a newly credentialed teacher who came into the school approximately 9 weeks after school started and replaced a long-term substitute. I'm teaching these 6th-8th grader, Mild-Moderate Special Ed. students Study Skills (improved study habits, math, language arts, science, and social sciences). I would love to bring more needed classroom enhancements into my classroom to help create a space of ease for more powerful learning and work production.
My Special Ed classes are in a Title I school (low-income) with students of varying ethnic backgrounds and learning issues ranging from ADHD, autism, mood disorders to a multitude of learning disorders.
Our Middle School is in a small beach community with an incredibly dedicated and caring staff. I hope I can live up to my students' needs and do 'right' by them!
My Project
My students need Bean Bag Chairs and a new set of calculators for math and science work. My students work in my room daily on projects, get help on classwork and homework, and get their reading done. This year I have attempted to create a space for all types of learners. The bean bag chairs will be a comfortable and wonderful replacement to our aging hand-me-down couch and the calculators will be much needed replacements for our currently dwindling supply of old ones.
Many of my students struggle to read, write, perform math and science, and have memory and attention issues; they have autism, ADHD, and a host of other learning disabilities.
I have worked hard to create a classroom space where comfort and appropriate accommodations and modifications abound in order to support them with their unique learning styles.
