Classroom Rugs, Lamps and Curtain Rods for Comfort and Safety

My Students

Our school is a public Montessori school in Alaska. Our teaching philosophy supports following the child. We strive to create a learning environment that is prepared for and centered around all of our children's interests. It is our job to help spark curiosity within our students so that they may learn to love learning. Our goal is to help mold each of our children to be life-long learners.

Our students are extraordinary because they are not afraid to be creative, to be curious, to question the world around them, to care for one another, to stand up for themselves and their peers, or to push themselves beyond their frustrations.

Due to our school being Montessori, we spend three full school years together. We have our kids from first through third grade. We have more than a teacher-student relationship; our classes become a family.

Our school serves many military families. We understand what it takes to nurture the academic and social-emotional​ needs of these students and families during deployment and all transitions they may experience. Our philosophy allows for military students to quickly adjust to our learning style and gives them the opportunity to explore the world around them.

My Project

Our classroom space invites creative thinking, fosters safe and peaceful exploration of big emotions and interactions with peers, and encourages everyone to challenge themselves academically and socially in a welcoming and safe space. We have created this environment with the use of rugs, lamps, curtains, and flexible seating.

We are requesting three new rugs, a new floor lamp, and magnetic tension rods to hang curtains across our glass classroom door.

Every summer I purchase one or two new rugs for our classroom, since they get well loved over the school year. I purchased a carpet shampooer in order to extend the life of these rugs, and so far this has proven to be useful and effective. However, we still do not have enough rugs for our classroom space. These define work spaces and help anchor our tables. The lamps are essential to maintaining a calm and quiet work environment. Our current floor lamps were second-hand from thrift stores or other classrooms. When their toggles broke, we managed to keep them turned on and choose to plug in and unplug them in order to extend their lives. While this has worked for the last two school years, these lamps are on their very last leg and are ready to be retired for good. The tension rods will be placed over our classroom doorway which is a full glass door with a set of three full glass windows next to it. In the event of an emergency, I would love to be able to pull curtains across the doorway so that we can remain safe and unseen within the walls of our classroom.
