This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
My students are amazing! Most of them have been at the school since kindergarten, and our school is special because we can really develop a close relationship with each individual student as they grow up.
As a school with a bilingual program, students are immersed in rigorous instruction in both English and Spanish!
There are numerous benefits to being bilingual and students work very hard to access the curriculum despite it being a challenge. We have both Spanish-dominant and English-dominant speakers, which means that 100% of our students are second language learners!
My Project
This is my first year in 6th grade and I am so excited to be with this group of kiddos! After teaching 5th grade for 7 years, I am missing the safe space that was provided with a classroom rug. Students would use it regularly during class time for reading and even some math lessons. This was also a way to get out of the repetitive routine of sitting at their desks.
Students were more focused and attentive in reading when they were on the rug!
Their closeness to each other helps them engage in the conversation and really immerse themselves in the texts that we are reading.
