My Students

My 6th, 7th, and 8th grade students all share similar experiences that I did growing up in Chicago and attending the Chicago Public School system. A lot of students at the middle school love to listen to, dance to, sing/rap to music. In my general music classroom I have a few keyboards set up as part of my curriculum. Every time the students get to play on these keyboards I always hear some sort of song or melody that a students is playing. Students are always eagerly telling me "Mr. Reyes, please hear this." Or "Mr. Reyes, how do you play this?" My students are eager to play instruments in the classroom.

I am confident that with instruments in the classroom, I will get all my artists in the classroom to play and lead the other students to play all their favorite songs.

I have so many talented singers and instrumentalists in my classes, that I hope they all get a chance to express themselves using instruments in order to play in duets, ensembles, or as a class.

My Project

The guitars and ukuleles will help the students become rock-stars and express themselves musically, and demonstrate what they've learned in class so far. So far students have learned music theory in class so far. We have learned how to identify, notate, and write note names on the musical staff, rhythm, and have learned how to play and create a couple of chords on the piano.

To better the students' musical experience in the classroom, I would like the students to have an instrument in their hands and play songs, and melodies rather than just listen to, talk about them or clap them.

With the help of these instruments, students will be able to play alone, in duets, small ensembles, or as a class.

The school owns a couple of guitars and some ukuleles, but not enough for an entire class to play or even share. With your help we can have the entire class choose an instrument to play on.
