What makes my students so special is their resilience. My students are on the Autism Spectrum. Students all over the country were at home learning for over a year. During that time, many had choices where they could sit and learn. My students love a variety of different things in our classroom, but more than anything in our classroom, my students love time where they don't have to be in front of their desk all day.
Flexible seating allows students to take charge of their learning and make the choices that work best for them, which is especially important for students on the Autism Spectrum.
This flexible seating will give them a choice as to where they can complete assignments. Currently, my students only have the option of working at their desks, or at a larger table in the classroom. Some students opt to sit on the floor in a corner with a clipboard. Currently, my students use milk crates, and they are very uncomfortable. Making sure students are comfortable is an essential component in motivating them. When given a choice as to where they can sit, my students will be more motivated to complete their assignments throughout the day.
It is my belief that if my students are given a choice, they will be more engaged in their assignments. There are some students who don't complete their work each day. Students with a choice for alternate seating may get more work completed than when they would just sitting at a desk. Bean bag chairs are an excellent alternative for flexible seating in the classroom.
