Classroom Redesign with Flexible Seating: Third Grade Edition Part Two
My students need flexible seating options such as Wobble chairs and Balance balls to help increase student engagement, focus, strengthen core muscles, and to develop a learning environment that is truly student-centered.
This upcoming school year, I have the awesome opportunity to loop with my second grade students to third grade! They are a fantastic bunch of children, with a passion and enthusiasm for learning that is truly an inspiration. Their hunger for knowledge and sense of community has deepened my own love for this profession. My students make coming to school each day, not only a joy, but an adventure. I am truly blessed to have the opportunity to spend another year with this terrific bunch.
There are currently 24 students in my classroom, with a variety of learning styles, preferences, and interests.
This diverse group of children has exceeded my expectations this year in their academic, social, and emotional growth and I want to provide an opportunity for them to help "design" our learning space for next year, as we will be moving classrooms. This would truly make their classroom their own space. A place where they will feel safe, valued, engaged, and involved.
The students in this room have really established a strong sense of community and have grown close this year. They not only make our classroom a better place, but our school as well.
My Project
The wobble stools and exercise balls I am requesting will not only help provide students with a sense of choice within the classroom, but will increase overall engagement by allowing students to burn off excess energy. Flexible seating choices, such as the wobble stools and exercise balls, have been shown to increase student motivation, strengthen core muscles, increase oxygen flow to the brain, and maximize student focus. In addition, allowing students to choose where and how they complete their work allows them to develop a stronger sense of self-responsibility in their learning.
Over the last decade, the world of education has changed drastically.
The increased demands placed on students and constant rise in the utilization of technology has changed the dynamics of the everyday classroom. We are seeing more and more students with symptoms of anxiety, decreased attention spans, and social/emotional struggles.
The students in my classroom have risen above these challenges. They have created a sense of community that is rare. They encourage each other and have learned to persevere. As the demands of the curriculum increase next year (moving to third), I want to do whatever it takes to maintain this type of drive, positive climate, and self-motivated mindset.
When I told the students that I would be looping with them to third grade, they were beyond excited. I want to give them the chance to design our new classroom and make it their "own." Knowing that flexible seating has so many benefits for children, I want to provide them with the resources they need to create a classroom that is student centered, and built for maximum learning. The stool and balls would allow us to continue to build the classroom of our dreams and would help me give back to these very deserving students.
