Classroom Project: Create Your Own Picky Pad

Help me give my students supplies to make their own picky pads, which is more cost effective than constantly buying new ones.

My Project

I am a high school special education teacher for a rural Wisconsin school. The other high school special education teachers and I service about 40 students. Many of the students we service are neurodivergent or have sensory processing disorders. These students typically struggle with sitting still in class and focusing at the same rate as their peers in the general education classes. Recently, after spending my own money buying fidgets for my classroom, I discovered all of my students absolutely love the silicone picky pads (which have tiny beads in them that you pick at until they pop out). These picky pads help curb skin picking but I’ve noticed that all my students gravitate towards these particular fidgets and they constantly ask if they can bring these picky pads to their other classrooms to help them focus and fidget in a way that is not distracting to other students. With these particular fidgets, once all the beads are out, the students can no longer use it and they need to get a new one. Instead of spending the money to constantly buy new picky pads, I figured it would be better to buy the supplies to make our own silicone picky pads so that students can reuse their beads and make their own over and over again. This would also be a fun classroom bonding activity as I try to arrange one classroom craft every so often to allow my students to bond. This project would benefit the students in two classrooms. If we get the supplies needed, we also plan to use the supplies to make picky pads for the students who would benefit from these in the middle school and elementary school in our small school district.
