I teach a class of 6-7 year olds in first grade. Our school has gone through several big transitions since COVID. Some of them have directly impacted the classrooms. One example is class cleaning. Currently, class cleaning that includes carpet care is done once a week and due to the tight schedule of janitors, our classrooms are not always cleaned. To solve this problem, I would like to involve my students by teaching them how to take care for their learning environment. I am asking for donations of a vacuum, a scrub brush, 2 brooms and pans, dusters, and hand soap. These items will be used by students and myself to keep our classroom tidy and safe.
My goals for this project is to develop independence and a sense of group responsibility and pride through caring for their learning space.
Many of my students are willing to help and love to clean when given the opportunity. Similar to academics, cleaning the classroom will give the students pride in doing their jobs and build a sense of community of working together. It will also foster independence because they will know what to do, execute it and see the fruits of their labor. In turn, having a clean and organized space will help them feel settled and organized mentally.
