My students make me smile every single day. Even when I'm feeling down or stressed, their energy, humor and vibrant personalities reaffirm my decision to become an educator. However, they are also teenagers, and many of them are still in the process of developing practical skills that they will need later in life.
Any teacher who has ever received a stained, crumbled paper, fished out of the bottom of a book bag, knows that many students often struggle when it comes to staying organized, and my students are no exception.
In order to demonstrate the importance of staying organized, I want to create a classroom environment that shows them what organization looks like, and inspires them to make the effort to develop their own systems of personal organization.
As a teacher, I am always looking for ways to teach students practical skills they will need as young adults, and I feel that my students need to develop more direction in staying organized, in order to succeed in college and the professional world.
Time is an extremely limited and valuable resource, and English class involved many different papers, including articles, texts, checklists, graphic organizers, vocabulary handouts and other worksheets. Students lose papers constantly, and often struggle to find replacements in the classroom, as they sift through stacks of papers that have no permanent home. These organizational materials will allow students to find what they need quickly and easily, so that they can spend more time learning, discussing and intellectually exploring. Additionally, by creating a neat and organized classroom, I hope to show students the importance of taking the time and effort to organize their own academic materials.
