This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
Even middle school students want to be successful learners for a bright future regardless of their current situation. My sixth graders want to be winners in life. Many students have experienced setbacks and trauma but need to feel as if their life matters. They need to know that when they walk into my classroom that it is a safe, nurturing, and loving environment. It is filled with opportunities for them to learn, grow, and make their dreams become a reality!
My Project
Imagine going into a classroom that only has 30 student desks, a teacher's desk. That's what my classroom looks like right now. There are no bookshelves, large tables or filing cabinet. I need materials, furniture, storage bins, and curtains to spruce up the learning space. Where will I put the books from the new library I hope to get? Where will I store the books and materials so students have access to the things they need to use for independent or group work? My classroom needs to be prepared for when my students start school. My students need two 9 cube organizers to place themed books for display and stored. I will place bins on the top of the organizers to collect their assignments or pick up lined paper and other materials.
I want my students can see the value of traveling the world and being a global citizen when I teach them social studies.
Every day they will be able to look at the shower curtains hanging on the window as a constant reminder that the world is bigger than just their neighborhood. Any materials I request will be used in my classroom to improve my classroom environment. Students need to know that they deserve a beautiful space even if their school building is quite old and doesn't have the modern bells and whistles. There is character and charm in the old when time is spent decorating and making it look just right for them!
