My students need 30+ more nonfiction books to balance out our growing library.

My students need books in our classroom library that they can't wait to get their hands on!
This school year I am teaching 6th grade students.
We are an extremely diverse urban school and have kids coming from neighborhoods all over the city. This year our school is implementing both Reading and Writing Workshops. What an amazing opportunity for my students! Instead of me dictating what students are to read and write every day, they choose what they would like to read and write. This allows children to work at their individual levels in material that interests them. It is amazing to see students excited and invested in their reading and writing!
If you were to think back to some of the best reading experiences of your childhood, I would bet they involved books you go to choose on your own, without someone forcing you to. They were also most likely on your independent reading level. This is the basis of Reading Workshop. In order to make this successful, students need just that: books they WANT to read on their independent reading level.
The only way students become better readers is by doing just that: READING!
How do I get my students to become lifelong, avid readers? By allowing them to choose their own books, they can become passionate readers. Books are the best investment we can make in order to make this happen.
