Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
We are a STEM-based charter school with 74% free or reduced price lunches. Recently, we also became a Blue Zone School, which focuses on movement and making healthy choices. The families we serve really want what is best for their kids and trust me as their teacher to help make those decisions. The students in my classroom are struggling readers and may not have the resources at home that I can help provide in the classroom. I encourage the students to express themselves in their work and apply it to real life situations. I use cooperative learning strategies and encourage freedom of movement.
My Project
My classroom has flexible seating and I want to finish off my seating with a couple of beanbags to help those students who need to be calm while reading. My students need timers as we continually practice to increase our fluency (rate of reading speed) to help improve comprehension.
Vocabulary journals are a must have to help improve our skills and knowledge of word meaning.
My students will get beneficial use out of the privacy folders, especially when they need to focus and not become distracted by others. It is also very helpful during tests. Several of my students are very easily distracted and helping them keep their focus is essential.
