My students need tables and chairs to create an ambient work environment that stimulates creativity and positive energy.

Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
J.R.R. Tolkien once wrote, "Not all those who wander are lost." A wall in my classroom was painted by my student, a talented graffiti artist. The wall has the word "Think" sprawled across, with the Tolkien quote tucked in the corner. This wall is an ode to our students' opportunity to think freely. Our school is part of the District Reference Group "H," which is the second lowest socioeconomic level a school can be placed in.
As a fourth year eighth-grade science teacher, I have already experienced the lack of funding our science program receives.
The activities that we complete, both in and out of the classroom, are greatly restricted by the socioeconomic makeup of our student body, as well as the absence of a budget for laboratory supplies.
The students in our school come from very diverse backgrounds and cultures and often do not have the resources that allows them to succeed at higher levels. Many of the students are disengaged, with attendance less than 85%, but are often discouraged by the connections made at school. Despite this, they are very willing to work in school and take the opportunity to utilize the limited resources that are available.
My Project
The environment in which an adult, or student, works and spends most of their day will have a profound impact on the quality of work that is completed. It is my goal to create a learning environment for my students that allows them to reach their maximum potential, by creating a work space that is both comforting, relaxing, and encourages self-directed learning.
The goal for my project is to create an environment for a philosophy club, that focuses on discussion based intervention for disengaged students, which comprise a large portion of our student body.
The focus of these discussions will be on the philosophical and ethical causes and effects of student disengagement. My vision brings together students of various forms of disengagement, such as students who attend less than 85% of school days, miss school as a result of suspension, and transfer students who may not feel as though they are a part of the community. In addition, students who are engaged will participate to provide advice and strategies for success.
As phase one of this goal, I would like to set up coffee tables, with nice, new chairs to foster an environment that resembles that of a contemporary college library. The main goal is to allow for collaboration between students and open dialogue to foster innovative ideas on how they can change their level of engagement to become more successful students.
