Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
My classroom is Daily 5 focused. We are very independent with the support of each other, not just the teacher, but from their classmates as well.
My students are the sweetest students around.
They have the biggest hearts and the most amazing personalities. We believe in having fun in the classroom, sometimes it's good to just stop what you're doing and dance for a minute just to get the energy out, especially at a young age. Our goal in the classroom is to be as prepared as we can to success in first grade. I don't want their to be a doubt in my students mind of them being ready to advance to the next grade. I want them to be confident in their learning and excited to learn more. I always have and always will have high expectations of my students and they never disappoint. They know that in the classroom, they have a safe haven and they shouldn't be afraid to make mistakes or to tell me to challenge them more. We are a family in the classroom and we act as such.
My Project
Our school is launching the Daily 5 next year, so the following resources will be used for various stations and small group sessions.
1. The magnetic letters - This will be great practice for spelling sight words at the beginning of small group. We are focusing on five sight words a week, and I don't want my students to just recognize them; I want them to be able to spell their sight words as well.
2. What's the Rhyme? Sorting Houses - I would initially model the activity then have students practice as a daily 5 station and call small groups (2-3 students) to help further their understanding in rhyming words.
3. Write & Wipe Pocket - Need I say more!!! These are such a great resource for multiple reasons and it saves paper.
4. Sight Word Tactile Cards - This will come in handy when introducing sight words, being able to see, feel, and hear the word is an amazing way to help them with their sight words.
5. Flip books - Are great when practicing their CVC word fluency.
My students need an abundance of support.
They come from an area where they do not have a lot and our school is majority Hispanic. With them being so young in age, the language barrier hinders them in certain aspects of learning, however; it doesn't stop them from trying their best and wanting to learn. My students always strive to do their best and with the help of different resources and visuals, it will advance their learning as well as their vocabulary.
