My Students
Many people may not know this, but materials like book bins, shelves and calendars are not usually part of the school budget. Teachers have to buy them out of their own pockets. One solution, both budget-wise and environmentally, is buying high quality items that will last a long time!
My students are a diverse group who attend an urban public school.
They come from amazingly diverse backgrounds ethnically, socioeconomically, and in terms of their learning abilities. Our school stands out from many other public schools because of our progressive social studies-based curriculum. From block building in Pre-K - 2nd grade to visiting Congress in 5th grade, our kids learn through hands-on experiences and trips. Our principal fights to keep class size relatively small so that our children have the greatest opportunity to learn.
My Project
I am requesting 3 bean bag chairs for independent reading, 5 supply caddies, 2 sets of book bins/boxes, 1 pocket chart, and 1 calendar kit. The items that I'm requesting will help improve our classroom environment. Although these items can be underrated, organizational tools and classroom charts really help students to feel safe and comfortable in a classroom. Students take pride in a classroom when charts are bright and book bins are solid and sturdy. This in turn helps them get in the mindset of caring for the classroom environment themselves. Last year, my classroom got the Donor's Choose grant of a new dry erase board/organizer and beanbag chairs to use during reader's workshop. These items were the hit of the year! The students loved lounging in the beanbag chairs as they read, and they could not believe how much the new dry erase board/organizer helped to keep our classroom neat and pulled together. The only catch was that, with only 2 beanbag chairs, we had to develop a schedule of who sat in them when. Having 3 more beanbag chairs will allow every kid to use the beanbags every day.
These items will really help to brighten and organize our class.
The beanbag chairs will improve the comfort and reading experiences of every student. Even though organizational items seem like they would be insignificant to the students' experiences in school, sturdy, good quality ones can really improve their daily life in the classroom.
