Classroom Library

Help me give my students books that champion Black voices and experiences. Additionally, I'd love to add to my classroom library's Spanish collection. Students deserve to have a great selection at their fingertips.

My Project

My students are curious, eager to explore new -and old- ideas. Each student brings a unique perspective to the classroom, making our learning environment full of potential. As middle schoolers, they are discovering their voices. Finding what excites and empowers them. Providing them with books in different genres allows them to see the world through different lenses: they become more empathetic, develop critical thinking, and read confidently.

The resources I’m requesting— books spanning genres such as fantasy, historical fiction, poetry, and non-fiction-- give students the opportunity to engage with literature that speaks to their individual interests and reading levels.

Access to a diverse selection of books enables students to develop a love for reading. Additionally, this project provides them with tools needed to expand their vocabulary and improve reading comprehension. Further, reading various genres allow students to appreciate different styles of writing, broadening their creative and analytical thinking.

For example, reading fantasy might spark their imagination and creativity, while historical fiction can deepen their understanding of the past. Non-fiction texts improve their research skills and critical thinking. Poetry will help them appreciate the beauty of language and expression.

The goal for this project is fostering a classroom environment where every student feels excited to read. I want to encourage independent reading, ignite curiosity, and help students discover new genres they may not have considered before.

Finally, I aim to create an inclusive classroom library that provides every student with the opportunity to find a book that resonates with them. Whether they’re struggling or advanced, I want them to feel they can grow as readers and writers on their own terms.

My students come from diverse backgrounds, each with unique perspectives. If they see themselves in the stories they read they are empowered to become confident and active participants in society.
