Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

I am teacher who teaches Reading Application & Study Skills at a Title 1 school. I teach high school students. 80% of the students who attend this school read below their reading level. 60% of the students who attend this school are students from low economic areas. The school library has been under construction ever since 2005, so the books are not available, only online resources. I am privileged to have notebook computers in my classroom, which helps out a lot. We began this semester reading novels; one of the novels that my department chose for my class to read was Wuthering Heights. When I first introduced the book to the students they were not pleased. The book—being a master prose—was foreign to my students. The vocabulary was difficult for them to understand, and words that should have been on their level were hard for them to make out. I feel the students are not exposed to enough leisure reading. The novels that we are reading now stay in the classroom. I believe in order for a student to really get into reading they would have to read every opportunity they have. I took different measures to help the students understand the book. I think if they were able to check the book out it would make it easier to complete the coursework that is assigned. How can we expect students' vocabulary or reading comprehension to increase if they are not exposed to enough reading material? I believe if the students are allowed to choose a book from the many different topics available then it is more likely that students would succeed in expanding their comprehension and vocabulary. We do a lot of writing in my classroom; the books will also help them develop different topics and ideas for the writing assignments. There are so many things that go on in the world that the students are oblivious to. Because they only see what is on television or what their friends talk about they miss out on a lot of important information that could be very beneficial to them. If we are able to get reading resources that would increase their knowledge, then it could expose them to things they might not have read if the opportunity wasn't presented to them. I would like to get reading materials to begin a class library. The library will not only allow students to read for “fun,” but it will give them an opportunity to expand their knowledge, to expose them to things they otherwise might not have an opportunity to know. I thank you for the time and consideration.
