My Students

Reading is the most important skill taught in school. It provides the foundation for all other learning. Children spend their early years learning to read and the rest of their time in school reading to learn. Kindergarten is where it all begins!

I teach kindergarten in a Title 1 school in Tennessee where a large percentage of my students receive free breakfast and lunch.

My students know that to be successful in life you must be able to read, but I also want my students to experience the joy of reading for pleasure as well as for learning.

My Project

The best way to become a good reader is to read! We have time set aside everyday in our schedule for independent reading. However, time is only one of the requirements for success. A good classroom library is also essential to encourage and support reading.

Children want to read when they have access to good books on their reading level that are fun and interesting.

AKJ Educational leveled readers A-C contains a collection of 120 books, both informative and entertaining. There are approximately 40 books on each kindergarten reading level so that students will have many choices as their reading level increases. I believe these books will "... not only increase student achievement but also motivate children to discover the love of reading that can last a lifetime." --Reading Rockets
