Ms. Waldron from Rensselaer NY is requesting books through DonorsChoose, the most trusted classroom funding site for teachers.
My students need a classroom library full of Harry Potter, Diary of a Whimpy Kid, the "Who was?" series and others...
This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My classroom is made up of 6 special education students. There are also 18 other students who rotate into my room throughout the day. I work in a special education school where we utilize a positive behavior incentive system, where good behavior earns them points and with those points they earn privileges. Most of my students have a hard time regulating their emotions, so we have break rooms, sensory corners and other areas where students can work alone or with an adult to identify and regulate their emotions.
If you ask my student's their opinions about school, they will tell you that they only want to do it if it's fun.
They have a hard time with concepts that come very easy to general education students. so in order to ensure their comprehension I have to dance, sing or stand on a table! My classroom is always a fun one to be in, and most of my students end up loving science because of all of the hands on activities they get to do!
Special Education students are, most of the time, disenchanted with reading. They find it hard because they wither have trouble decoding, comprehending, or reading on their grade level. Giving students different leveled books to read, with all different genres, makes reading more interesting for my students.
My hope is to create a diverse library so my students can find something interesting and fun to read in their spare time!
My students are creative, and love to listen to read alouds like Harry Potter, Wonder and others, however our school does not have a library, and my classroom came with minimal books. I am hoping that with more book choices in my room, comes more reading for fun!
