My students need literature that will grab their attention. Most of the books from the Harry Potter series to the comics & graphic novels are items they've requested.

Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
My 8th graders are a diverse bunch. They are bight and eager and range from ELL to above-grade level. Many of my students are DREAMers, but they're all academic achievers! They've got the ambition to attend college to reach their goals.
My school serves a predominately Latinx population in Oklahoma City.
Our school is 100% free breakfast and lunch.
Many of my students fall below the poverty line and face situations no child should have to face. They come to school with courage and do not let hardship weigh them down.
My Project
I want to provide my students with an engaging class library that is culturally inclusive.
Most of the books on my list are books they’ve suggested.
My students need books for independent reading time – both in and out of the classroom. We currently have over 100 books. My goal is to build a library of several hundred books including novels, comics, short story collections, and graphic novels. The library in my school has not received funding for books in two years. A classroom library will provide them with access to books they’ve selected and topics that suit their interest.
Reading comprehension is one of the most important determinants of academic success. Unfortunately, a majority of 8th graders in Oklahoma City are at a 5th-grade reading level. A student can increase their reading level by several years by incorporating reading into their routine. Access to books to accommodate different reading levels and interests will help encourage 2+ years of reading growth this year for my students.
