Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
My 8th graders are a diverse bunch. They are bight and eager, and range from ELL to above-grade level. Some of them are dreamers, but they're all achievers!
My school serves a predominately Latinx population in Oklahoma City. Our school is 100% free breakfast and lunch.
Many of my students are below the poverty level and deal with situations no child should have to face. They come to school with tremendous courage and do not let hardship weigh them down.
My Project
I am a first-year teacher. I want to provide my students with an engaging class library that is culturally inclusive.
Most of the books on my list are books they’ve suggested. My students need books for independent reading time – both in and out of the classroom. My goal is to build a library of several hundred books including novels, comics, short story collections, and graphic novels. I've already started to build a library but this project will help me towards that goal.
Access to books across grade-level and genre will help encourage 2+ years of reading growth this year for my students.
