Some of my fondest memories from grade school are of my teacher reading to my class. We would sit on the rug in the back of the room with our heads in our hands and get swept away into the world of such classics as "The Velveteen Rabbit" and "Charolette's Web". Now as a third grade teacher, I try to stimulate warm memories like these for my own students. Every day after lunch we have "The Three R's" - read, relax, and refresh. I have shared wonderful stories with them and it is our favorite time of the day. However, the cozy effect is somewhat diminshed because we do not have a rug or carpet in my classroom. My students sit in their desks while I read. I recognize the need for there to be a welcoming, comfortable area in the room for children to read and I have looked into buying a rug on my own. However, they are fairly expensive and I spend any extra money I have on books and supplies. I would sincerely appreciate a rug where my students can begin to form their own fond memories of school.
