This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Reading is a key to developing a language. A classroom library would be a dream in helping to continue to support my English language learners in developing their second language, as well as a love for reading.

My students are in third grade.

English is their second language. They come from low socioeconomic demographics. Their parents work very hard to support their basic needs. My students are all on free breakfast and lunch. While they face economic challenges within their home, they are a light and joy in school. They love to learn, and all have a dream to become successful.

My Project

My students are in desperate need of a classroom library. It would be ideal to have books in both English and Spanish, in hopes to develop both of their languages. Not only will reading improve their grammar, vocabulary development, imagination, empathy, and concentration, it will also teach them about the world around them. Reading will take them places they have never been before. Reading will help teach these activities: journal writing, learning about the elements of literature, discovering an author's purpose, making personal connections, summarizing, and so much more. I have requested chapter books, picture books, short stories in both English and Spanish, and in a variety of genres from first - fourth grade reading level. I have also a book rack, bean bag chair and storage bins for a classroom reading corner.

My project is essential because reading is the basis of one's future success, and ultimately an educated mind.

Reading and being a reader truly unlocks the potential in a child. Books help children develop vital language skills - especially at an early age.
